Island Life, Giving Good Sit and Butterflies

#1

I have just returned from a week away with my family in Fiji on Castaway Island and I can without a shadow of a doubt say it was the best family holiday we have ever had. I wouldn’t call it a luxury holiday in that the hotel was a little tired, however the location and island was flawless, the staff were incredible and the kids club was a huge hit. And the best bit was that it was entirely disconnected. I didn’t open instagram or my emails once. There wasn’t even a TV in the bure. Bliss. If it’s a family holiday you are after I can not recommend it highly enough.

My favourite part of interior decoration is the hunt. Particularly hunting for the perfect occasional chair. Occasional chairs, or accent chairs as they are also known are what give personality to a space. They give a room spice and can score major style points. So when shopping for an occasional chair these are the 4 things to look for:

1/ It gives good sit. You must try before you buy. Sit in everything to make sure it has the right seat height, seat width, back height and is perfectly comfortable for you.

2/ It adds personality. The quirkier the better in my opinion.

3/It needs a killer silhouette - Swiss designer Pierre Jeannerette was a master at creating this.

4/ It has motion - I love a swivel chair in a room but also could tilt or glide - but never all at once! haha

And my last thought on occasional chairs: too many legs in a lounge room can make it feel nervous. By that I mean, choose to have some pieces on the ground and others on legs. And this includes coffee tables. Then if your lounge is on the floor give your occasional chair some legs to perch on. Or vice versa.

If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they’ll fly away. But if you spend time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come. Don’t chase. Attract.” - Mario Quintana

p.s I’m trying to get better doing instagram. I’m far from perfect. Constantly dipping in and out of it when I have space in my brain. But I’m here if you want to follow me.

p.p.s Liked this newsletter? This is the second ever issue of Pillow Talk (you can check out the first one here) and if you like it, I’d be forever grateful if you would forward it to a friend that you think might enjoy this little fortnightly dose of inspo.
