Curtains 101, Your Primary Bedroom as a Sanctuary & Shade

#1

Learn from my mistakes when it comes to curtains.

In my opinion good window treatments can make or break the look of a room. I learn’t this the hard way in my own home. When we first moved in I needed new curtains fast and cheap and now I completely regret it. The hardware broke, they became impossible to open and they just looked terrible. I should have just waited for my budget to allow for the better quality.

But now I know better. In general, I like to go for either an inverted pleat or 'S-fold' with rings, hung on a thin rod. See a good example in the pic above by Katie Hodges Design.

Keep the hardware simple, and the drapes fuller in soft linens. And even though I’ve seen it executed beautifully, I don't love drapes that puddle heavily on the ground. Instead I like the drapes to just kiss the floor.

Also, always place the rods as high as possible so when you walk into a space, you want your eye to go all the way up rather than feeling cut off.

When designing a primary suite (note I said “Primary” and not “Master”) the design should be a harmonious blend of form and function that fosters a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Here are 3 things you can do easily yourself to make this happen:

  1. Opt for soothing “sludgy” tones to establish a sense of stylish serenity.

  2. When choosing a bed, go for one that has shorter legs or even sits on the ground to make the ceiling feel higher. Beds that are propped up on high legs can cut the room in half.

  3. Incorporate personal elements that reflect your taste and lifestyle but also things that bring you joy. This will help create a sense of ownership and comfort. Think sentimental artwork, photos, or cherished mementos from your travels. These things will not only add character, they will also create a connection between the space and your own sense of peace for a blissful night’s sleep.
