Top 4 Interior Design Trends I love right now

I love to forecast interior design trends and it's integral to my job to stay aware of what's coming next. To keep ahead of the curve I look at what trends are coming through via Salone Del Mobile - the annual global design fair in Milan. I also look to see what is coming down the runway in fashion. And then I translate what I find into the spaces I design.

Often what you see at the design fair and in fashion, you'll see in interiors one to three years later.

So here is a round up of my favourite 4 trends I’m loving at the moment.

Sustainable materials

One big trend I’ve been seeing, is products made from sustainable materials. I'm noticing more homewares products produced from these materials and I'm a huge fan. In particular, living room design trends are mirroring the revolution against fast fashion, now aiming for longevity and timelessness. Clients are looking for a more responsible approach to design so that their living spaces can essentially live longer by incorporating elements that encapsulate their surroundings.

Sculptural Shapes

Another trend that has been around for the last year and becoming more prevalent is furniture and homewares made in sculptural forms. From armchairs to ceramics, artists and makers are creating beautiful shapes and using interesting textures too. I hope it's here to stay because I love it!

Boucle is here to stay

Boucle - that nubby textile that migrated from Chanel jackets to everyone’s sofas these last few years—is here to stay and at this year’s Milan Design Week. Bouclé’s most notable reincarnation was a colour-based one, moving from that off-white that has been dominating our Instagram feeds, to bolder, nature-inspired hues—think a mossy green at the Italian brand Arflex, rust-brown at the Dutch company Montis, and gold at Saba. Then there were cozy, new variations on the texture itself, beyond the usual loopy pile, including waffle-y chenille, soft mohair, luxurious cashmere, and menswear-inspired tweeds.

Colourful Stone

There’s no question about it: Unique stone surfaces are trending in a major way throughout the home. The next big thing in stone? Colour. And lots of it. The clearest-cut (no pun intended) example of this was at Alcova, where the natural stone company SolidNature took over the bottom level of a former industrial laundry facility with a collaboration between OMA and fellow Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis. The exhibition’s candy-coloured archway (seen at the top of this post), made from nine different slabs of polychromatic onyx, became one of the most Instagrammed items of the week. Marcelis showcased an entire bathroom suite carved from the palest pink onyx, a delightfully contemporary take on the 1950s bathroom hue. OMA contributed, in addition to a stone (yes) bed, a breathtaking bookcase, made from Satin Verde marble, with shelves in a striated onyx with veins of gray and tangerine (see below). The exhibition made clear that stone needn’t be just a surface, but a venue for experimentation—and also a status symbol.
