A fast guide to editing your shelfie game
Small things you can do to wow visitors to your home and and make your bookshelves tidy.
They say the eyes are the windows to your soul, but we could also attribute that adage to bookshelves. They’ve become our modern-day altar to display the stories, accessories, and memories that fuel our lives.
So: no pressure, right? To make this spot in your home represent you, while still looking great? Fear not. We’ve got you covered with some of our top tips for organising and curating your bookshelves.
Step #1: Take a photo
Who doesn't love a before and after pic? It's so great to see how far you have come (and share your #shelfie to the gram).
Step #2: Clean
Take everything off the shelves and start with a blank canvas. Then clean it all down and get rid of any dust and grime that might be hiding in the back.
Step #3: Group everything into categories
Take a mental inventory of what you’re working with. As you are sorting through the categories (books with books, photos with photos etc), start envisioning what pieces of decor you want to place next to each other and how you want to create groupings.
Ask yourself what items do you want to be seen first? Is there anything missing? Also, this is the best time to ask yourself the question do I really need this piece? Does it bring me joy or a happy memory when I look at it? Can it be stored somewhere else or donated?
Step #4: Start with large objects
Start placing in your larger objects first. Style similar accessories at the same time, that way it’s easier to distribute them with intention. We like to move from large scale items, like vases and books, to smaller accessories.
Next, think about colour. This will give your shelves some order and some breathing room – don’t just stack on the shelves haphazardly.
Step #5: Only use the things you love
Don’t put something you’re not in love with on your shelves. Instead, leave space. Give yourself visual breathing room and a place for new objects you find along the way.
A bookshelf is something you’ll wind up staring at a lot, so you should love every single aspect. Love a photo you have on display but not the frame? Swap it. Did your kids paint a little sculpture that you love? Add it in.
Step #6: Take a step back and evaluate
This may seem obvious, but it’s necessary. In most cases, less is more. Mix in stacks of your books with a favourite sculptural piece, take a step back, live with it, and then come back after a couple of days. Make sure to adjust anything that looks off and take note of what you got perfect.
